I'm sure you've heard the expression "if we don't move, we rust." Well it is SO true!
Since this IS the About Page, here is my story, the short version:
Born in Portland Oregon in 1977 I grew up outside most days, rain or shine. I rode my bike, climbed trees and played sports from 4th grade through high school. Basketball, baseball, football, wrestling, Judo, hacky sack and running around the neighborhood.
After high school I stayed in okay shape but missed having something to pour my physical effort into, and although lifting weights does make me look good, I never enjoyed it and I do not enjoy a standard fitness gym environment.
I joined the Army, trained in Ft. Knox and was stationed at Ft. Carson CO. Served my whole enlistment there including deploying to Iraq in 2003.
After finishing my enlistment and returning home to Oregon I quickly became depressed, sedentary outside of my job as a delivery driver, and started drinking several nights a week. I ignored my wife and son and found no joy in anything. I gained so much weight that my knees and lower back throbbed all the time and I even had to lean on the bathroom sink to brush my teeth. I avoided the mirror and I loathed myself to have let myself go, I was too far gone.
I had a check up and was warned to change my ways as I was prediabetic and on my way to an early grave. Damn.
So, I started going to the gym again. And I lost some body fat, looked intimidating and got stronger. I also became less flexible, developed painful joints and my lifts stagnated. That's on top of it being boring for me.
But then I found someone local teaching a sport/art I had seen in a movie. It was from France and called Parkour. I went to my first class more nervous than I can remember being in years. I was the only adult in their 30's (now I work with athletes in their 70's!) The coach guided me and I pulled off the move! I felt amazing!!! I committed to parkour and as I lost over 45 pounds I gained better balance, flexibility and amazing bodyweight strength. I began to move more like Spidey than an overweight veteran. The BEST part? I was having more FUN and learning more about myself than in any other sport or activity I'd done in my whole life. I could do it anywhere in the world, by myself or with others. I had changed. Or had my reality changed? It was like waking up from the Matrix.
So that's what this is all about. Me trying to help other adults change their lives and health while having fun and learning something that could also potentially save their lives in an emergency. Something that makes them strong and capable of carrying out everyday tasks easier.
Daily mobility warm up + bodyweight workouts + parkour techniques +plyometrics + slackline + hacky sack + hand balancing is (some of) what you learn in the Movement Matrix Method, a parkour-based fitness program for adults. Made for beginners and others who may feel too far gone, or just not enjoy lifting weights and running. Maybe you just want to prep for an upcoming obstacle course race like a Spartan Race, or impress your kids or grandkids.
For Online training I offer parkour or regular personal training, including custom tailored workouts, help with nutrition, accountability and more. I've worked with people from the Philippines to Ireland to Los Angeles.
Now I own Revolution Parkour Gresham in Oregon for 10 years and we are in our 7th year teaching Parkour as PE in a local middle school. We have a competition team with athletes ranging from 7 to 72! We have built a great community and we want you to be a part of it.
Let's do this. You can do it, and it will even be fun!
I believe that no matter who you are, it's NOT too late for you to be healthy, fit and move well again. Some of my biggest mantras are "Consistency over Intensity", "Motion is Lotion", and "Movement is Medicine". Life ebbs and flows, and so do we. By building fitness around FUN, and never needing any equipment for exercise beyond the floor, the wall and bonus if you have a bar( or branch) you ensure longer-lasting, more sustainable results and aren't location dependent for successful and self led workouts. Whether it's learning Parkour or getting back in shape, let me help get you to that point of self-sufficient with it. I hope to work with you!
I did not invent or create any of the techniques I will teach you or the exercises I will teach/program for you, as Man has been moving and training for millennia. But a look at the methods of the past can show us effective and sustainable ways to reach peak levels of balance, strength and flexibility. I discovered a world of physical and mental self-mastery over years and I want to share everything I've learned with you.
